While the regeneration of the bay is high on everyone's list there are a number of other newsworthy items that affect Portman. Click on the following headings to bring you more information:
Portman Golf is discussing the possibility of re-opening the mines via a concession. More on this link..
The Corvera airport will be located on the road between Murcia and Cartagena. See link for more. See Map. From what I hear it should take about the same amount of time to reach Portman

There was fog in the bay in August '07. Pat Greenwood provides these pictures
The
calcified and tattered remains of a dinosaur have been
found in the early hours of the morning on the beach. (Created by
children with stones the day before) It is hoped
that the discovery of this rare creature will not give
ecologists the basis for stopping work on the bay.
060608 - The recent storms have filled the harbour channel with sand and efforts are underway to clear the channel for the season.
Last summer Lifeguard stations had been established in Playa Lastre and two on the main beach. A sure sign that things are picking up for the summer of '07. We look forward to seeing them this year.
230708 - The Portomagno interchange was opened during the Fiestas Santiago Apostol It is the new section of the road from La Union that will border the new Portomagno complex. The drive I understand is to complete all the roads and then stop until the units are sold.
060608 - Work continues on the Portomango site however the word is that only the base infrastructure (Roads, sewers, lighting, etc) will be completed at this time. One wonders if it will be an off plan offering rather than pre-built.
170308 - The site continues to develop as the sales offices are being installed in front of the market . More info to come
The estimated 500 (not 600 as previously reported) unit development behind the current football field has started. The development will stretch back across the road towards the mountains. Promosa, a building contractor, has been selected by Grupo Union to build the complex. Substantial retaining walls are being installed on the rambla side of the building works.
Calle Major excavation is in progress but no pictures yet of how the finished product will look. They have started digging the second of the 3 streets that will provide access the complex.
However, from Monte San Jose one can start to understand where things may be situated. Excavation for one of the three roads in Portomagno can be seen in the far middle of the picture (looks like a landing strip). The rambla, which will remain in situ is shown moving out to the right.
For those of you from the UK who don't know where the mound builders went after all the centuries we now have proof that they are alive and well in Portman, It's difficult to see but the new mound is being built to the right of the existing mining debris mound. However, in the last week mound building has shifted to the hills on the way to La Union. Trucks bring Portman dirt from the site up the hill, dump it, get loaded with hill dirt and dump it on the site. There must be some logic in this somewhere.
New Developments
220408 - The government has put a hold on a Portman Golf plan to develop 7.5 million square meters of land in Portman. See link...
Apartments
Word has it that the hills behind the old port will be used for apartments in the planned community of 20,000 for Portman. More on this after the visit to the Planning Department in La Union.,,
Hotels
Word has it that the old metal washing works, Lavadero Roberto, will become 1-2 hotels. More to come....
Pictures as of 03/02/08
The trench for the pipeline has started. At the speed it is progressing it looks like the Portman end will be underground in a few weeks. This stretch of road will be used, it is rumoured, by the trucks carrying slag from the bay to the old San Jose pit.
Pictures as of 12/01/08
The pipeline stretches from the old San Jose pit to the road leading into Portman. Work, which is visible from the road, is continuing on the La Union side of the pit.
Pictures as of 15/12/07
Survey stakes are in place along the road from La Union to the hilltop entrance to the old San Jose Mine and down the valley behind Portomagno (see picture) indicating the location of the new water pipeline from La Union. The staging and distribution of pipe in preparation for the installation of the line. One could assume that the line must be installed before the road that toll take the earth from the bay to the San Jose Pit will be put in place.
15DEC07 - Great progress is being made on the water pipeline from La Union. It is assumed that this line will have to be in the ground before the road to the San Jose pit will be started in preparation for the transfer of the earth in the bay to the pit. Digging is rumoured to be starting around March of 2008. We shall see.
Regional Park
Word has it that none of the regional park will be used for residences. See link for the latest outline of the park.
Remodelling

Remodelling has been brought to a halt to the opening of a Chinese Restaurant at Playa Lastre. The problem is one of proximity to MOPU, the blue ballards that identify the Spanish Coastline. New build must be at least 50 metres from a MOPU. The more rigid enforcement is a result of abuse in the rest of Spain. Looks like the planners are holding fast, at least for a while.
Casa Tio Lobo
Grupo
Union will be renovating Portman's Casa del Tio Lobo on Plaza
Zapata. It may
be converted into professional offices.

030208 - Local; rumour is the building will be
housing the Portman government offices in about 8 years
when the government will move to Portman from La Union.
Paturro Dig
January brought news that the dig has run out of money and has pulled up stakes. I hope that this is just a temporary delay as we need to leverage the Paturro legacy.

An archaeological dig is in process on the fenced in site where Roman Villa of Paturro once stood. IDILEXSA located in Elche is conducting the work. Samples of the mosaics may be found in at Museums where more museums and information about them may be found. More Pictures...
Paint Tint Mines
It
seems that the
Romans weren't just after minerals in the mountains.
They supposedly also mined tints for paints.
